Chrissie Van Mierlo teaches at the School of Arts, English and Drama at Loughborough University, UK. Her research primarily concerns early twentieth century literary culture in Britain and Ireland, connections between religion, politics and literature, and links between literary and theological modernism. Her interest in texts and contexts is complemented by genetic research, and work in the area of modern manuscript studies. Fritz Senn’s first book published by Piccola Biblioteca Joyciana, titled Ulyssean Close-ups (2007), introduced readers to a few pointed essays on Ulysses, written in a markedly Sennian fashion of super-close-reading. Senn’s approach to reading is philological, deeply discerning of words’ layered history, of their malleable networks of connotations, echoes, nuances, and of their cunning semantic and phonetic permutations. The present volume evolved from a few days that we spent with Fritz at the Zurich James Joyce Foundation, talking about all things Joycean and moving between issues of translation, reading, Homer, and many others. We amassed quite an archive of audio recordings, eventually transcribed, edited, and published in Scientia Traductionis. Sometime later, a modified version of our conversation was published in Papers on Joyce. Thus a few days expanded into a few years. But the topics kept resurfacing, older formulations demanding reformulations as Fritz kept writing, lecturing, and producing an ever-expanding archive of thoughts on topics that are central to his scholarship and to our academic interests. Romanian Joyce: From Hostility to Hospitality

This study makes Romania’s largely unknown Joycean heritage visible to an international readership. Reviewing Joyce’s critical reception and translations, as well as the writer’s influence on Romanian prose, it brings Derrida’s notion of “hostipitality” to comparative literary and translation studies in order to theorize the impact of politics and ideology on fiction. Joyce’s Heirs: Joyce’s Imprint on Recent Global Literatures

The figure of James Joyce is intangible, an almost all-encompassing figure whose height and breadth bypasses countries, continents and even time constraints and limitations. Many writers have confessed to their being indebted to his works and readings, as have many scholars over the years. However, not everything said about Joyce has always been praising: his contemporary D.H. Lawrence is known to have criticised him on the basis of his Biblical references or his journalistic-indebted narrative, which he defined as “old and hard-worked staleness, masquerading as the all-new”. Many more writers have, however, found inspiration in Joyce’s narratives and stories than not. Admirers and detractors aside, it is clear that Joyce’s figure is larger than life. Almost as a reversed parallelism to D.H. Lawrence’s criticism, Joyce can be pronounced a figure of almost Biblical proportions. One may like him or despise him; however, no one is left indifferent by it. This lofty, academic assertion has its more mundane mirror image in the widespread myth that all Dubliners, upon entering a conversation of literary dimensions, will firmly state their own opinions on the Dubliner’s work, even discuss some of his passages, only to later acknowledge (perhaps in the intimacy of one of those public houses Joyce himself so well depicted) that they have not read the book at all. This, rather than taking away literary value form Joyce’s work, proves how all-encompassing and ever-arching his work can be. Discussed alike by high-ranking academics and Dublin taxi drivers, Joyce’s oeuvre is an ever-continuing metaphor of life and its essence at the core of the city which he left but always inhabited. This is a collection by diverse hands on the thematic, conceptual and contextual impact of time in and around Joyce’s Finnegans Wake. Gula’s introduction acknowledges the well-worn critical path on which the book embarks in reading “Cyclops,” yet this work is set apart from previous efforts by its singular episodic focus and expanded historical scope. The text ultimately reconsiders the “Cyclops” episode within a cultural-nationalist milieu that is significantly broader than the 1890s Celtic Revival. Fusing theories of modern nation-building, Irish studies, and the postcolonial turn in Joyce criticism guided by, among others, Vincent J. Cheng, James Fairhall, and Emer Nolan, Gula assumes the mindset of an “archaeologist”. Marianna Gula has been an instructor in the Institute of English and American Studies since 1993. Her primary fields of interest are Irish literature and culture, particularly James Joyce and contemporary Northern Irish film and fiction, as well as literary translation. She gained her PhD in 2003. She has been a member of a translator team thoroughly reworking (re-translating and re-editing) the canonical Hungarian translation of Joyce’s Ulysses (published in 2012). About the Author
Jin Di is a Chinese translator. He was the first Chinese translator who translated James Joyce’s Ulysses into the Chinese language, a project that took 16 years to complete. In 1978, at the invitation of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, he began translating James Joyce’s famous novel Ulysses. In 1982, he went to live in the United States and continued his translation of Ulysses. In 1993, Taiwanese Jiuge Publishing House published Ulysses (Volume 1), and he became the first Chinese translator of Ulysses.

Gabriel Renggli (University of York)

Gabriel’s book Joyce as Theory, published in February 2023,
examines the various scenes in Finnegans Wake that deal with the
production and interpretation of texts. Any reader of the Wake knows
that ALP’s letter is somehow important and that Shaun hates Shem’s
writing, but what Gabriel argues is that in these and other narratives,
Joyce presents a systematic philosophy of meaning-making – a
hermeneutics – which markedly resembles what would come to be
called “literary theory” in the second half of the twentieth century.
This lecture provides an overview of what theory is, how Joyce fits
into it, and how Joyce’s approach resembles that of Jacques Derrida,
in particular.

Als Proust »Auf der Suche nach der verlorenen Zeit« und Joyce »Ulysses« schrieb, entstand auch in Finnland ein epochales Werk, das oft mit Joyce verglichen wurde: In Volter Kilpis Prosa-Epos lädt der Gutsherr Alastalo die wichtigsten Männer der Schärengemeinde ein, um sie vom gemeinsamen Bau einer Dreimastbark zu überzeugen. Während mit Hingabe Pfeife geraucht und Grog getrunken wird, umkreisen die unterschiedlichen Lager einander listig in dem Versuch, die eigenen Interessen durchzusetzen. Kilpis über tausendseitiges Opus magnum spielt an einem einzigen Nachmittag und ist eine grossartige Charakterstudie der Menschen, die den Kosmos der finnischen Schären im 19. Jahrhundert bevölkerten. Vor allem aber ist der Roman ein überwältigendes Sprachkunstwerk, das einen unvergleichlichen Sog entwickelt und durch Stefan Mosters Übersetzungsgrosstat endlich der deutschen Leserschaft zugänglich wird.

We charge a fee of Swiss Fr. 200, which covers the social gatherings for the week as well as Foundation expenses. One of the highlights includes a boat trip on Lake Zürich and dinner in Hurden.

Als Joyce während des 1. Weltkriegs in Zürich am Ulysses schrieb, machten hier die Dadaist:innen Furore, die das Cabaret Voltaire bespielten und die Zürcher Bourgeoisie aufschreckten.

Natürlich wusste man voneinander. Joyce war zwar kein Dadaist,  war nie Anhänger von -Ismen. Er hielt sich davon fern, indem er gleich alle umfasste – und so blieben auch die Wort­revoluzzer von der Spiegel­gasse nicht ohne Wirkung auf Ulysses: in Joyces fröhlicher Vielfalt hat Dada ein deutliches Echo. Die eine Seite seines Humors hat eine Zürcher Note.

Anlässlich des 100. Geburtstags des Ulysses 2022 soll dieses Zürcher “Literatur­treffen”, das so nie stattfand, in einer Leseperformance gefeiert werden.

In diesem Lesemosaik prallt Joyce auf Dada-Texte, es zeigen sich verblüffende und witzige Ver­wandt­­schaften und auch falsche Freunde. Umrundet wird die Lesung von Sounds aus objets trouvés von Pet­flasche bis Pappkar­ton, die der fabelhafte Balts Nill ihnen entlockt.

When Joyce and Nora arrived in Zurich, they stayed briefly at the Gasthaus Hoffnung (Hope Inn) before continuing on to Trieste. Joyce relished the fact that the proprietor’s name in 1915 was Döblin. (The building has since been replaced by a larger complex.)

Joyce Collection Among The Most Personal Yet Found

A strikingly personal collection of documents by and relating to James Joyce has recently been donated to the James Joyce Foundation in Zurich.

The documents have been given by Hans E Jahnke, the stepson of Joyce’s son, Giorgio. Dr Jahnke inherited them from his late mother Asta, who was Giorgio’s second wife and consequently his heir.
The documents, which were held in a battered trunk, were handed over at a ceremony in Zurich by Dr Jahnke in the presence of the Irish Ambassador to Switzerland, Joe Lynch, and a number of other guests.

These documents are unusual in that they are more personal than any of the Joyce material that has turned up recently. They include 50 letters by Joyce (37 of them to Giorgio) and 34 postcards (23 to Giorgio).

Some of the letters are addressed to both Giorgio and his first wife, Helen Fleischmann, and some to Helen alone. These letters will help to flesh out the activities and relationships of Joyce during the 1920s and 1930s and are an important addition to Joyce’s biography. They are likely to be more personal than Joyce’s letters to Paul Leon released by the National Library in 1992, which were mainly about business matters.

There are also a large number of letters to James, Nora and Giorgio Joyce, including 113 from his publisher Sylvia Beach. Among these is an important letter in which she announces that she will publish Ulysses.

This collection will also be of interest to Samuel Beckett scholars since it includes a letter and a postcard to Joyce from Beckett (instances of their correspondence are very rare).

There are also five letters to Nora or Giorgio from Beckett written after Joyce’s death.
The collection includes a touching letter to Nora from Stanislaus Joyce, James’s brother, telling of his feelings just after his brother’s death. There are also some legal and medical documents, among them items concerning the condition of Giorgio’s sister, Lucia.

Most of the manuscript material relates to Finnegans Wake and, unusually, Joyce’s poetry. The most important Finnegans Wake item appears to be what the foundation describes as “21 sheets of Finnegans Wake Notebook material” for Part II, Chapter 3 of the work.

The Zurich James Joyce Foundation, under director Fritz Senn, was already a considerable presence in the Joyce world. This bequest stipulates that the papers must be available to researchers, enhancing the foundation’s status as a major centre of Joyce scholarship.
