James Joyce
      "thought through my eyes"
            "gedacht durch mein Augen"

15 December 2000 - 4 February 2001

This exhibition goes beyond biographical concerns and will approach Joyce from a rather unusual perspective by focusing on visual aspects in his major works.

Ulysses, for example, deals with the problem of simultaneity in the "Nacheinander" of a linear text in a new, "Cubist" way, which allows us to perceive the novel as an object in space. Moreover the exhibition attempts to show how Joyce's language itself becomes visual -- in Finnegans Wake even single letters themselves take on visual significance.

The works of the artist Hannes Vogel complement this view of Joyce, both echoing his visual qualities and going beyond them.
