On the first floor of this building, Joyce wrote five episodes of Ulysses: Proteus, Calypso, Lotuseaters, Hades, Aeolus and Lestrygonians. This is also where he lived when met Frank Budgen, an English selfmade man and painter who later wrote James Joyce and the Making of Ulysses. There is a commemorative plaque on the building.
